Facelift Surgery is an invasive plastic surgery procedure which reduces certain signs of facial aging. It is also known as rhytidectomy and involves tightening of the muscles to create desired facial contours and structure. It is an expensive treatment which is not covered by any medical insurance, yet some private financing options are available.

Ideal candidates

Patients who undergo such procedure are usually between the age of 40 and 70. Their goals are to minimize the signs of aging which are developing or have developed. Candidates are required to keep realistic expectations from the treatment and not look at it as a fairy-tale mirror to bring back youth. The treatment only helps to rejuvenate the appearance of the face by removing excess of fat and by tightening of muscles.

Types of facelift surgery

Ideal candidates are tested for some of their traits such as nature of the skin, bone structure, general health and appearance. The surgery is available for people of all ages in both men and women. The type of facelift surgery and method adopted largely depends on individual’s criteria.

Full facelift

Full Facelift is useful for those people who are aged above 60 or 70 who have developed several signs of aging such as sagging, creases under the eyes and excess fat in certain spots. It is performed with a longer incision for reaching larger area for treatment. It is an all-inclusive treatment with maximum difference before and after.

Mid facelift

It is used to gently lift up and tighten the areas in the upper face. Deeper incisions are used to perform the treatment and certain fat removal or implant procedures are used to refine the contours.

Mini facelift

It is used on smaller areas and to provide subtle effects. It is thus known by the name ‘Weekend Facelift’ in Cosmetic Surgery. Incisions are relatively smaller and are used for removal of excess fats and tightening the tissues. It is usually performed on forehead to reduce wrinkles.

Lower facelift

It is a procedure specially designed for eliminating sagging, folds and jowls. The procedure and incision depth are similar to Mini Facelift but this procedure is aimed for lower parts of face.

Threading is another type of Facelift which is used as ‘Quick Fix’ in less extreme cases. Many techniques are available; Endoscopic and Cutaneous Facelift are very common. Side effects are rare. Directions must be followed prior to and post treatment.

Usually, a neck lift procedure by Dr Trang Vo-Nguyen in Chantilly, Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Arlington, Middleburg, Leesburg, Manassas and Warrenton lasts for 2-3 hours. Good mental as well as physical health is absolutely necessary for anyone who wishes to have a neck lift done. Some of the common concerns regarding neck lift procedures are as follow:

Loose or weakened neck muscles; turkey wattle

If your neck muscles are loose or weakened, it may cause neck “bands” to appear. Turkey wattle as it is also called, can be corrected by platysmaplasty surgery upon recommendation from your surgeon. In this surgery, incisions will be made either behind the ears or under the chin so that the neck muscle can be accessed by the surgeon for manipulation.

Permanent sutures will be used to keep the tissue in the right position, but modern procedures that are less invasive will see the surgeon make smaller incisions before using an endoscope to complete the surgery. The kind of anesthesia to be used will have to be discussed with the surgeon and one that you’re most comfortable with should be chosen. General anesthesia is ideal if you wish to remain asleep while the procedure is going on. Otherwise, local anesthesia with sedation works fine too.

Excess fat in neck region

Surgeons usually make small incisions under the chin to get rid of the extra fat during liposuction. Along with your neck lift, if you’re undergoing other procedures, surgeons find it easier to start off with liposuction. Pre-operative consultation with the surgeon will help you determine the right manner in which to go about it and how much time it’s going to take. Stiches and bandages will be used after the incisions and it’s crucial to follow the instructions of your surgeon properly to ensure proper care of the stiches and bandages after the surgery.

Excess skin in neck region

Similar to platysmaplasty, incisions for a cervicoplasty will be made by the surgeon to trim parts of your skin before lifting it into the right position. Stiches or tissue glue will be used to secure the area. The procedure will be done between two and four hours, but the complexity of the procedure will determine the right amount of time needed to complete it. Compression bandages will be fitted into the region after the procedure is complete and you will have to wear it for a minimum of a week.

How to prepare for neck lifts?

When you go in for a consultation, the surgeon will tell you what medications must be avoided before the surgery commences. Certain vitamins and medications thin the blood, thus causing increased bleeding. Smokers will have to kick the butt at least a couple of weeks prior to the surgery and must refrain from smoking for another two weeks post surgery. Proper healing is ensured by not smoking.

Even dieting is not advised during this period as proper intake of food is instrumental for proper healing. Comfortable and loose clothing must be worn on the day you go in for surgery. Button-down shirts or blouses must be used so that it won’t have to be pulled over your head or neck. After the surgery is complete, a week is the least you should take off from work. The recovery period will be specified by the surgeon, and following his/her instructions is crucial to get back on track in due course.
