Chin Liposuction

Chin LiposuctionThe aesthetically ideal chin region has a smooth, lean, chiseled appearance, and a clearly marked transition from the lower face to the neck. Unfortunately, the natural aging process and/or weight gain can cause fat to accumulate in the chin and neck region, creating a distortion of the facial contours in that area and giving the entire face a wider, rounder appearance. Attempting to eliminate chin and neck fat through diet and exercise alone can be very difficult, which is why chin liposuction is an effective and rewarding option for many patients.

Liposuction of the chin and/or neck region is a surgical procedure performed to remove excess fat below the chin, thereby restoring a more youthful and well-defined silhouette to the lower face. Chin and neck liposuction serves to correct aesthetic issues in this area that have resulted from excess fat accretion, such as: a double chin, the appearance of “jowls,” weak jaw definition, and neck bands.  As with most facial surgeries, liposuction of the chin and neck is a complex and highly detailed procedure, and should only be performed by an experienced, Board Certified facial plastic surgeon with a keen eye for facial aesthetics and a comprehensive working knowledge of the intricate facial structures, such as Dr. Trang Vo-Nguyen (Dr. V).

Dr. V is the founder of The Virginia Institute for Surgical Arts, a state-of-the-art medical practice located in beautiful Chantilly, VA, where she serves as the lead facial plastic surgeon. When performing liposuction of the chin and neck, Dr. V utilizes her extensive facial surgery skillset to create naturally beautiful results that blend harmoniously with the rest of the face and produce a more sculpted, youthfully contoured facial profile.

During your chin liposuction surgery, Dr. V will make small incisions on each side of your jaw (or below your chin) before saturating the fat with a tumescent solution in order to prepare it for removal. She will then use a cannula (surgical instrument in the shape of a small tube) to suction the excess fat from the lower chin, neck, and jaw region.

After your chin liposuction procedure has concluded, your chin and neck area will be wrapped with gauze and you will be given a chin strap and soft cervical collar to reduce swelling and promote proper skin contraction, which helps to facilitate the healing process. The majority of your post-procedural swelling should subside within 3-5 days; however, you will be advised to wear the chin strap and cervical collar for approximately two weeks. Some patients elect to wear high-necked clothing or scarves during the initial recovery period.

Patients seeking to correct aesthetic problems caused by skin laxity (loose, hanging skin) in the chin and neck region (responsible for creating the dreaded “turkey wattle” appearance) may benefit from having their chin liposuction performed as a component of a neck lift surgery. In the context of a neck lift surgery, plastic surgeons are able to treat skin laxity issues by strengthening the weakened or atrophied neck musculature, and then perform liposuction to sculpt the contours of the neck, jawline, and chin.

In order to ensure that you achieve optimal results from your chin liposuction procedure, it is important that you select a physician with a strong working knowledge of facial anatomy, such as Dr. Trang Thuy Vo-Nguyen (Dr. V). Dr. V has the background, clinical experience, and surgical skill-set to create customized treatment plans that are designed to safely and effectively improve the balance and structural proportions of your face with liposuction surgery of the chin and neck region.

Dr. V is double board certified in the field of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and through her extensive training, research, and achievements, she has built a reputation as one of the leading facial plastic surgeons in the nation.  If you are interested in learning more about having your chin liposuction surgery performed by Dr. V, please contact The Virginia Institute for Surgical Arts today.
